Top Ten Albums (In no particular order)
One: Modest Mouse - Good News For People Who Love Bad News
What's not to love about this CD? Even the cover artwork is amazing, just beautiful and mesmerizing. Now, I may not have been the most cool old school hardcore MM fan, but you can be damn sure that I was turned into one once I heard this CD. Everything on this CD is incredibly smooth. Production is top notch (a Modest Mouse CD that isn't LO-FI? *gasp!*). Modest Mouse takes you on a journey. From the 9 second intro of horns that (unexpectedly) blast through your speakers once you pop in the CD, to the unbelievable catchy 'Float On', to the Tom Waits tribute 'This Devil's Workday', to the much more mellow 'Blame It On The Tetons'. There's nothing wrong with this CD. Nothing. I love it.
Two: Death Cab For Cutie - Transatlanticism
Much like the Modest Mouse disc mentioned before this, Death Cab For Cutie hit their peak with 'Transatlanticism'. Everything is superior to their prior albums. Lyrics, production, flow. It's all top notch. Now this record might not be upbeat and fun, in fact it's completely the opposite. But damn it, it's great. The perfect album for long night drives or just lying in bed in the dark in deep thought. Ben Gibbard may not touch on the most ambitious of subjects, but he does expand upon universally known ones.. and with the lyrics he uses, it doesn't matter. It's awesome, end of story.
Three: The Mars Volta - De-Loused In The Comatorium
Here it is. The hardest choice I had to make. Sure, Frances The Mute is equally amazing and may be much more ambitious (a-hem, thirty minute song), but this is the CD that changed my life. I didn't think music like this was possible. Hell, I didn't think someone's voice could go that high. But they did it. They did it all, and more. This CD will reel you in, beat the shit out of you, and then spit you out. And you'll be BEGGING for more. Over the course of the 60 minutes you'll hear dozens and dozens of music genres that are mixed in that you probably never even knew you would have enjoyed. It's a ride. A crazy, insane rollercoaster ride that you will want to ride over and over again until you throw up, and then ride some more.
Four: Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here
Getting into Pink Floyd a few years ago was probably the best choice I have made. It opened up this whole new world of music for me, my introduction to prog if you will. It was definitely a hard decision picking which Pink Floyd CD is the best, but it was also pretty clear that it would be 'Wish You Were Here'. I mean, if you took any one song on this disc, took out the rest, and sold it.. it would still be amazing. But instead, you get five. Two of which are 10 minute prog journeys. This is just one of those albums that you wouldn’t want to change anything.
Five: Norma Jean - Bless The Martyr and Kiss The Child
I knew a hardcore band would be on this list, I just wasn’t sure who it would be. In the end it was a toss up between Hopesfall and Norma Jean. But come on, 15 minute hardcore song? Of course Norma Jean is going on the list. They pushed the limits for hardcore. They took a genre that is mostly the same throughout every band that you listen to, and did something completely new. This CD has some of the most brutal break downs and unexpected starts and stops. It keeps you on the edge of your seat the whole time.
Six: Tool - Lateralus
Tool. What more is there to say? Some people say that Aenima is a much better CD than Lateralus, I thoroughly disagree. There is so much more maturity in this CD, and so much more talent. The whole CD just blends together and melts in your head leaving you with a general feeling of: “Whoa”. I still remember that day oh so many years ago, riding my bike to strawberries to pick up what I soon would discover to be one of the best CDs of all time. If you don’t love this album, there’s something wrong with you.
Seven: Alice In Chains - Jar of Flies
Oh, Layne. Why did you have to leave us? Well, at least you gave us some of the most amazing music before you departed. Sure, Dirt was a great CD. As was the self-titled. But it was this little 7 song EP can only be described in one word: haunting. It creates the most incredible atmosphere from the moment ‘Rotten Apple’ starts playing. This CD was the best move AIC ever did, in my opinion.
Eight: The Postal Service - Give Up
Ah, and Ben Gibbard makes a second appearance on this list. This time working with Jimmy Tamborello under the alias ‘The Postal Service’. I actually got into TPS before I even listened to Death Cab For Cutie. Once again, Ben’s lyrics are top notch. This time, though, the music is much more upbeat and poppy. This album has a great variety of styles and is constantly changing. There was a time where this CD never left my player for months at a time. Hearing “I am finally seeing, why I was the one worth leaving” will never get old.
Nine: Radiohead - O.K. Computer
This is another case of a band hitting their peak. Radiohead outdid them selves with O.K. Computer. This CD is very ahead of it’s time and was a classic as soon as it came out. I don’t think anyone had one bad thing to say about this album. It may be a concept album; it may just be heavily influences by alcohol. I don’t really care. It’s just awesome. I think what I am really trying to say here is: I may be paranoid, but I’m not an android.
Ten: Bright Eyes - Lifted Or The Story Is In The Soil, Keep Your Ear To The Ground
It’s Bright eyes. It’s indie. It’s emo. It’s original. I love it, you may hate it. I’m not going to write much on this CD.

So I woke up this morning and said to myself..
"Jesus motherfucking Christ, it's the summer and I'm waking up at 7:30 AM!? I should be just going to bed right now!"
And so I drove into work, asked my boss if he had a minute to talk, and put in my two weeks. YEP! I HAVE A FUCKING SUMMER TO MYSELF! This is going to be so nice. I am so happy right now you don't even know. Will you dance with me?
These last two weeks are going to feel so long..

Jack Johnson - Sitting, Waiting, Wishing |
] |
Well I figure since I haven't used this in a while I'll give everyone an update on what is going on..
One: I did not lose my job, I actually got moved over to a better building where I don't have to wear a tie and dress up. I also have my own cubicle and sit on my ass for 8 hours a day answering phones.. it's not as bad as it seems, the people are really cool.
Two: Even after all that commotion about my job and such I had an epiphany and, yes, I'm going to goto college. I'm quitting the job and going to FURTHER MY EDUCATION. Not sure why, but oh well. The plan is to hit up Mass Bay for a couple years taking Info Tech classes and then transfer into a state school somewhere. Hopefully everything will work out.
Three: Nanci is going away to camp this Tuesday which really blows.
Four: This summer I'll most likely just be hanging around with a few select people, so if you ever want to hang out just give me a call and I'll be up for anything.
Five: Mars Volta is the most amazing band ever.

Built To Spill - Car |

It's funny how things work out. You have a great job and you're pretty sure they're going to keep you on after you graduate and you'll have a set future. Then, you find out that your manager is going to keep the other two interns instead. Awesome. So now I might have to stay at school until the end of May unless I find another job (on this much short notice). This sucks. I'm hoping that with my experience between the two IT jobs I've been at it won't be too hard to find another job. Blah.
I wanna see it when you find out what comets, stars, and moons are all about.
